What is rendering?

A coat that both protects and beautifies your walls

Rendering is a coating applied to the outside walls of your home. It smooths over tired or mismatched brickwork, seals the surface against wind and rain, and gives the whole property a clean, updated appearance. A good render both protects and beautifies, which is why it is one of the most cost-effective ways to lift a home's kerb appeal.

Over time, old render can crack, stain or come away from the wall. Fresh, well-applied render solves that, and modern finishes stay looking good for far longer with much less upkeep than painted walls. Rendering sits right alongside our well-reviewed insulation work, so you are in experienced hands whether you want render on its own or as part of an insulation project.

Choosing a finish

Which type of render is right for you?

There is no single best render. The right one depends on your home, your budget and the look you want. We look at all of this on a free home visit and walk you through the options, colours and textures so you end up with a finish that suits your home and lasts.

Low maintenance

Silicone render

A modern, through-coloured finish that is flexible and crack-resistant, sheds water and has self-cleaning properties, so it stays looking fresh with little maintenance. A popular choice for a smart, low-fuss result.

One coat, no painting

Monocouche render

A coloured, one-coat cement-based system applied in a single through-colour, giving a durable, attractive finish without the need for painting.

Classic & proven

Traditional render

The classic sand and cement approach, usually painted after it cures. Hard-wearing and well proven, and can be a good match for certain properties and budgets.

What is included

Neat, lasting render is all in the preparation

Neat, lasting render is all in the preparation and the application, and we take care over both. We start by checking the walls, removing any failed render and dealing with repairs or damp so the new coat has a sound base. We protect windows, doors and surrounding areas, then apply the render system in the correct coats for a smooth, even finish.

John keeps you informed throughout and the team keeps the site tidy, which is exactly what our customers highlight in their reviews. When the work is done, we walk round with you to make sure you are happy with the finish before we pack up, backed by the £1,000 Checkatrade Guarantee.

Render with insulation

Pair rendering with external wall insulation

Rendering pairs naturally with external wall insulation, since the render is the finishing coat over the insulation. If your walls are cold as well as tired, it is well worth asking about doing both together, so you get a warmer home and lower bills as well as a fresh new look, all in one project.

We are happy to quote for render alone or render with insulation. Ask us on your free home visit and we will set out both options clearly, so you can decide what makes sense for your home and your budget. Learn more on our external wall insulation page.

Rendering questions

Good to know.

How long does render last?

A good render finish can last for many years. Modern silicone and monocouche finishes are through-coloured and hard-wearing, so they resist cracking and fading and need very little maintenance compared with painted walls. Lifespan depends on the system, the surface underneath and how well the walls were prepared, which is why careful application matters.

Can you render over old or cracked render?

Sometimes, but not always. If the existing render is sound it can often be prepared and over-coated, but if it is loose, cracked or damp it is usually better to remove it and start fresh. We will inspect your walls and give you an honest recommendation rather than papering over a problem.

Which render finish is best for my house?

It depends on your budget, the look you want and your walls. Silicone render offers a flexible, crack-resistant, self-cleaning finish with little upkeep. Monocouche gives a durable one-coat coloured finish. Traditional render is hard-wearing and can suit certain properties. We will help you choose the right one when we visit.

Will new render help with damp?

A sound, well-applied render helps keep wind-driven rain out of your walls, which can reduce some damp problems. However, damp has many causes, so render is not a cure-all. If we spot an underlying issue during our visit, we will tell you and advise on the right fix rather than simply covering it up.

Do you cover my area?

We render houses across Edgware, North London, Enfield, Barnet, Watford, Harrow and Hertfordshire, for domestic and commercial properties. If you are nearby and unsure, just call and ask.
